قال يو سانغ بوم ، عضو لجنة المخابرات البرلمانية ، للصحفيين بعد إحاطة من جهاز المخابرات الوطني: ‘[Kim Jong un appeared tired with clear dark circles around his eyes during his public appearance on May 16, and was estimated to weigh over 140 kilograms according to AI analysis.’

Yoo added that Kim was believed to be suffering from a ‘severe’ sleeping disorder, citing an intelligence report that North Korea has been intensively collecting latest medical information on insomnia treatment for its top official.

North Korea’s tightly controlled state media rarely mentions the leader’s health but in March, the North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Kim works until 5am, quoting him as saying that he was used to working overnight, according to a report by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

South Korea’s spy agency is monitoring the possibility of Kim falling into a ‘vicious cycle’ of increased dependence on alcohol and nicotine, and experiencing worse insomnia given the large amount of foreign cigarettes and snacks being shipped into the North, Yoo said.

The North Korean leader reportedly has three children, thought to have been born in 2010, 2013 and 2017.

The latest briefing came just hours after a failed attempt by North Korea to launch a satellite to better spy on its US rivals.

Yoo reported the leader appeared to have observed the failed launch on site. The country’s National Space Development Agency said it would investigate the failure ‘urgently’ and carry out another launch after new testing, Korean Central News Agency reported.

The launch, which is a violation of UN Security Council resolutions that ban the country from conducting any launch based on ballistic technology, sparked panic in Japan after the missile prompted an evacuation order on Hokkaido Island.
